Who believes abortion is murder? What you believe is based on your world-view. Your world-view is formed in part by whether you believe the Biblet. Does life begin at conception? Before God formed you in the womb, he knew you. Therefore, abortion is the destruction of a human life and must be stopped.

RALEIGH, N.C. - October can be a great month for the Ladies who Lunch. The food might not be particularly filling, but the stories of people helped by the women sitting around the tables provide much more substantial satisfaction. That was certainly Cokie's experience at a lunch last week with our daughter in Washington, and one this week with our daughter-in-law in Raleigh as local women's giving circles - great groups of women who band together to better their communities - honored their awardees.

Where is Tom Hanks when you need him? Something sinister is happening in the Catholic Church, at least according to New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd. And the way she writes, it reads like the beginning of a treatment for a Dan Brown extravaganza. Her plot, you see, is just that absurd.

Education has been my most important beat for more than 50 years. Obviously, the future of this nation depends on students learning not only the academic essentials but also how to think for themselves as actively participating citizens of this republic. President Barack Obama's secretary of education, Arne Duncan, now has nearly $5 billion in "Race to the Top" stimulus funds to enable each child to be a confident lifelong learner, not just a nameless statistic in national reading and math scores. At least, I hope that is his goal.

Over the last month, our nation has focused a great deal of attention on Gen. Stanley McChrystal's substantial troop request for our mission in Afghanistan. This is the sort of matter we should be talking about, because the debate between a counter-insurgency vs. counter-terrorism approach, which is at the heart of this decision, is sure to set the tone for policies and missions well beyond the Afghan borders.

There is no point in repeating the results of the debacle that occurred in the real estate market and meltdown in the major banking giants, except that the reference points to a failed self-serving policy manipulated by greedy individuals and financial firms that they controlled. History tells us that economic changes of this magnitude are bound to fail unless the plan will be beneficial to all of the people affected. Social Security is a prime example of a good policy that is beneficial to everyone. Another is public transportation. Another is the Tennessee Valley Authority.

I work for the Columbia County Highway Department and would like to inform the taxpayers about the county furloughs. We are working overtime, and now we are going to be put on furlough, which will mean more overtime. Why eliminate four days a year and work more overtime? This costs the county more. Now we are approved to hire five full-time and four seasonal employees? Where is the logic behind this?

When NFL players take the field dressed in pink, you know something has changed. We've come a long way from the days when breast cancer was a taboo subject. In this 25th anniversary year of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the ubiquitous pink ribbons remind us that we need to keep pushing for a cure, because we know that close to 200,000 women in this country will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year (and 1 in 8 over their lifetimes).

In theory, the national news media function in a free market of ideas: a self-regulating, relentless quest for what the old Superman comics called "Truth, Justice, and the American way." (Actually, Clark Kent's newspaper-reporter disguise strikes contemporary audiences as a sentimental anachronism. Today, he'd be a rogue cop or a CIA operative.)
