RIO - Stanley N. "Dugan" Hurd, 82, a lifelong resident of Rio, passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Portage on June 21, 1927, to Harvey and Pearl Peterson Hurd.
He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran; a graduate of Rio High School and the University of Wisconsin American Bankers Association; past president of the Columbia County Bankers Association; a former member of the Rio Community Club and Rio Legion Post 208. He retired after 30 years from Rio/Fall River Union Bank.
Stan was the proud owner and operator of Hurd Auto Literature. His lifelong passion entailed attending car shows and swap meets where he bought, sold and traded antique automobile literature and other transportation-related ephemera. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Elayne (Kreyer) Hurd of Rio; daughters, Kristine (James) Moll of Rio, Karen (Stewart) Pribbenow of McFarland and Loreli (Matthew) Jenkins of Randolph; son, Loyal (Sue) Reierson of Watertown; brother, Harvey Hurd Jr. and his wife, Geraldine, of Portage; sister-in-law, Marge Hurd of Florida; eight grandsons and two great-grandsons; nieces; nephews; and other relatives.
He also is survived by Shirley Hurd, the mother of his daughters, and lifelong friends from around the country. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Fred Hurd, and sister, Maureen "Dolly" Millard, and her husband, Leonard.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Smith-Vangen Funeral Home, Rio. Pastor Jerome Pribbenow will officiate. Friends may call for visitation one hour before the service. Inurnment service will follow at Ohio Cemetery with military honors. A meal of fellowship will follow at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in Stan's honor to the University of Wisconsin Paul P. Carbone Cancer Center, 600 Highland Ave. K4/658, Madison, WI 53792-6164.
