Dorothy M. Stout

WESTFIELD - Dorothy M. Stout, 94, of Westfield, passed away Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, surrounded by her family at Divine Savior Extended Care, Portage, where she had resided for the last 2 ½ years.

She was born Jan. 12, 1915, in Iowa City, Iowa, daughter of Joseph and Albina Zarecky Gerber. Dorothy attended elementary and high school at St. Mary's in Iowa City. She attended the University of Iowa, where she became an enthusiastic Hawkeyes fan. Dorothy married John R. Stout on Aug. 27, 1938, in Iowa City. She worked for the Iowa City Press Citizen, Rockford Times and Parkersburg Eclipse. While working for the Eclipse, she wrote a popular golf column. Dorothy and her husband retired to Sun City West, where they were active in politics and volunteer work. In her later years, she moved to Westfield to be near her family, especially her great-grandchildren, who she greatly adored.

Survivors include her two daughters, Judy (Carl) Brakebush of Westfield and Debby (Chuck) Miller of Shawnee, Kan.; three grandchildren, Jonathan (Michele) Brakebush, Rebecca (Nathan) Hunter and Camilla (Sean) Daley; seven great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Nicholas, Alexa and Andrew Brakebush, and Abby, Emma and Kate Hunter; many other friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Jocelyn Daley; one sister, Sister Helen Gerber; and one brother, Martin Gerber.

A Mass of Celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Westfield, with the Rev. Michael Richel officiating. Interment will be in Westfield East Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the hour of service Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established. Steinhaus-Holly Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Westfield, is serving the family.
