Ten school districts in the state will hold referendums Tuesday, but one of the questions will not ask for money.
In Dodge County, voters in the Waupun and Randolph school districts will vote on a proposal to detach the city of Fox Lake from the Waupun Area School District and attach Fox Lake with the Randolph School District.
The referendum was brought on by Fox Lake citizens angered over the closing of their elementary school as part of a cost-cutting move by the Waupun Area School District.
Fox Lake makes up about 28 percent of the assessed value of the Waupun Area School District, with between $280 million to $300 million in property value, and shares in 28 percent of the district's debt. Fox Lake has a public school population of about 232, according to a financial impact study.
If there is a split vote, with the referendum question passing in one school district and failing in the other, the referendum would fail, according to the proposal.
Voters in the Wisconsin Dells School District will vote on a referendum to borrow $2.3 million for a building expansion at Spring Hill Elementary School.
The space is needed for the district's continued participation in the SAGE class size reduction program, which brings in $560,000 a year in revenues. If the referendum fails, it could result in teacher layoffs and increased class sizes in kindergarten through third-grade classrooms, according to Superintendent Chuck Whitsell.
According to the state Department of Public Instruction, three school districts in the state will hold referendums asking for $20 million or more for construction projects. The Pewaukee School District in Waukesha County is asking for $24.9 million, with the Stevens Point Area School District in Portage County asking for $23.1 million. The Cedar Grove-Belgium School District in Sheboygan and Ozaukee counties is asking for $20.7 million. The other districts with referendums are Florence, Oakfield, Trevor-Wilmot Consolidated and Whitefish Bay.
