It's six months in jail for a Portage man who reportedly lied on his tax returns for six years - and he still has to pay his taxes.
Russell J. Schmid, 38, pleaded no contest last week in Columbia County Circuit Court to two counts of felony fraud-rendering income tax return.
Four additional counts were dismissed but taken into account for sentencing by Judge Daniel George, who ordered a three-month consecutive jail term on both counts as part of a four-year probation sentence and $6,257 in restitution.
Schmid reported that he had no income on his tax returns for 2003 through 2008, while his W-2 and 1099-G forms indicated he received incomes between $26,400 and $34,900 during those years, a special agent with the Department of Revenue reported in a criminal complaint.
Schmid owes $6,257 in taxes for those years, the complaint stated.
